In 2012 Nagia was on the verge of becoming a child laborer as her widowed mother was no longer able to afford supporting their family by herself. Her mother was the custodian of Bebe Mahro School and was born deaf and was never able to access any type of education. The local school teacher named Razia Daudi reached out to ALF and asked if we could find a sponsor for Nagia, because she was so talented that it would be a shame if she could not pursue an education. ALF matched her with a sponsor when she was in the ninth grade. She excelled in her studies and showed great potential. Nagia is so bright and eloquent that she surpassed her peers and was accepted into Kabul University’s College of Law in 2016. She has now graduated and is an Attorney and will eventually earn a Ph.D.to be a judge. Nagia says, “I want to be able to help put policies and laws into place that will allow Afghan men and women to minimize the gender gap that prevents women from reaching their full potential in Afghanistan.”
With the help of ALF and my sponsor, I got accepted into Kabul University’s School of Law. — Nagia Sultan Mohammad, ALF Student
